In February 2023, Tamar Mitts’ paper, “Cross-Platform Reactions to the Post-January 6 Deplatforming” (co-authored with Cody Buntain, Martin Innes and Jacob Shapiro) was accepted for publication in the Journal of Quantitative Description: Digital Media. The paper investigates how the use of social media changed after large platforms such as Facebook and Twitter banned thousands of accounts in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. Capitol. The paper shows that online activity shifted to less regulated platforms, on which toxicity and hate speech were higher.
