A new project by Professor Tamar Mitts, in collaboration with colleagues from the United States Institute of Peace and the University of Chicago, examines the Taliban’s social media campaigns during its 2021 takeover of Afghanistan. Drawing on rich data that includes various types of multimedia that the group disseminated online, the project examines how the Taliban’s propaganda changed over time, as the group’s territorial control expanded. The project also examines how social media users in Afghanistan reacted to the Taliban’s territorial control, by analyzing a unique geolocated dataset of online content posted during the Taliban’s increased control over the country.
