The Institute’s Comparative Defense Studies Program was directed by Senior Research Scholar Dr. Stephanie Neuman for close to 40 years. It  was dedicated to comparative research on defense issues and peacekeeping throughout the world, with a focus on security issues in the global south. To this end, the program concentrated on collecting data, producing analytic studies, and sponsoring conferences and seminars. Special emphasis was  given to alternative concepts of peace and security. Before her passing, Dr. Neuman and her family endowed the Institute with a fellowship in Comparative Defense Studies, to be awarded annually to a scholar born in the global south and engaged in comparative defense Studies  of the global south.  The fellowship will begin in the fall of 2021.
