Professor Tanisha Fazal and Ryan Griffiths published an article, entitled “A State of One’s Own: The Rise of Secession Since World War II” in the Fall/Winter 2008 issue of the Brown Journal of World Affairs.  The piece seeks to explain changes in the number of states in the international system, in the number of new states emerging via the process of decolonization, and in the number of secessionist movements in the system.  Fazal concludes that secession is a new and rising trend in state formation.
