On August 1st, SIWPS Associate Director Jean-Marie Guéhenno appeared in The International Herald Tribune with an op-ed titled “The Fragmenting Middle East.” In it, Professor Guéhenno writes that the military coup in Egypt was both bad for both democracy and regional stability, and that the West is wrong to forgo the idea of soft power in return for what could be short-term hard-power alliances with more Western-friendly regimes.
