Political Scientist Stacie Goddard, the Betty Freyhof Johnson ’44 Professor of Political Science and Associate Provost of Wellesley in the World at Wellesley College, will move to Columbia/SIPA and become the next Director of the Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies effective July 1, 2026. A Columbia Ph.D., the Institute would like to welcome Stacie back home. Writes Goddard, “I have long been indebted to the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies. As a Ph.D. student at Columbia, I spent much of my time on the “13th floor,” and benefited from the guidance of SIWPS scholars, including Robert Jervis, Jack Snyder, Warner Schilling, and Richard Betts. To now join the next generation of brilliant scholars at the Saltzman Institute, and help direct our efforts in a time of significant uncertainty, is a great honor.” The Institute wishes to thank Dr. Elizabeth Saunders for her superb direction of the Institute over the past academic year and her tireless work to expand programming and engagement with students, including the launch of the Chalkboard Politics Podcast and the student-faculty discussion series. Saunders will remain at SIWPS as an active member of the Executive Committee, and as a Professor in the Department of Political Science, rejoining other former Institute directors including V. Page Fortna, Jack Snyder, Peter Clement, and Keren Yarhi-Milo.
